About AEP

AEP is the undergraduate study abroad program of Charles University and CERGE-EI. Since 2002, we have welcomed thousands of students from top U.S. colleges and universities to Prague for an academically rigorous, culturally immersive, and impactful semester abroad experience. Our program, formerly known as the Undergraduate Program in Central European Studies or UPCES, was renamed to AEP: Academic Experience in Prague in 2025. While we have a new name, the program remains the same, focused as always on engaging academics that deepen students’ understanding of our region, a caring and welcoming community supported by our dedicated team, and an experience that is truly, uniquely Prague.

Mission

The mission of AEP: Academic Experience in Prague is to provide undergraduates with an unmatched semester abroad in Prague through dedicated instruction, intentional integration, and excellent program support.

English-language program at Charles University

AEP courses are listed under the Charles University Faculty of Humanities, and students earn a Charles University transcript. All courses are taught in English, making the program accessible to students regardless of language proficiency. All AEP students are enrolled in a Czech language course as part of their curriculum, helping them build proficiency in Czech while taking core courses in English.

Based at CERGE-EI

AEP is based at CERGE-EI, the leading institute for economics research and graduate education in Central Europe, and part of Charles University. AEP courses span disciplines across the liberal arts, drawing expert faculty from Charles University and beyond. Students interested in economics can take advantage of the many resources available through CERGE-EI, including courses and guest lectures by top economists from around the world.

Located in the Schebek Palace

AEP is located in the heart of the city, just a block from Wenceslas Square, in the historic and beautiful Schebek Palace. The palace dates back to the 1870s and served as the former offices of the Austro-Hungarian State Bank, followed by the State Bank of Czechoslovakia. On their way to class each day, AEP students ascend the palace’s marble staircase and make their way to our classrooms, the former public rooms of the palace. Antique furniture, frescoes, and richly decorated ceilings make the history and culture of the region come alive as students study.

Dedicated and Caring Staff and Faculty

AEP is staffed by a team of dedicated professionals committed to ensuring that students make the most of their time in Prague both inside the classroom and beyond. From long before students set foot in Prague to long after they have returned home, AEP staff are accessible, caring, and supportive. Small class sizes give students high levels of access to and support from our faculty, who are leading academics and professionals in their fields.

What makes AEP special is the people behind it. When talking to friends about their study abroad experiences, what often seemed lacking was institutional support - but the staff truly made this program.

The people. All my peers and the faculty MADE this program. I am so grateful for all the amazing connections I made on this trip and will never forget it. Also the Czech nature, if you like hiking, exploring, or just romping around in the woods, take some friends and go!!
